        故事发生在抗战时期，老家在东北的平安（胡杏儿 饰）和病重的母亲在自小青梅竹马的孝义（吴卓羲 饰）的帮助下来到了南京，准备投靠父亲顾万齐。顾万齐是南京当地数一数二的米商，富可敌国，家中妻妾成群，平安的母亲只是当年在顾家工作的下人，因和顾万齐一时意乱情迷才生下平安。结果，平安还没顺利进入顾家，母亲就去世了。孝义帮助平安安葬完母亲后，帮她找到了顾万齐，平安最终得以进入顾家。
　　进入顾家后的平安受尽欺凌，但她乐观向上的性格为勾心斗角的顾家带来一丝阳光。此时，日军逼近南京。南京一个汉奸富商潘世昌（陈锦鸿 饰）不顾国人感情充当日军买办，孝义和一班爱国激进分子对其恨之入骨，多次想教训他一顿。
　　日军终于进南京了，顾家也举家逃离。乱世中，孝义、平安和潘世昌展开了一段恩怨情仇
