简介：

1940年，在香港刚中学毕业的莫笑侬（商天娥饰），得知在重庆的双亲逃避日军空袭时不幸身亡。笑侬顿失经济支持，为完成入读大学的心愿，迫不得已投靠一直甚少接触的姑姐唐瑛（关菊英饰）。瑛是香港著名的交际花，穿梭于香港上流社会，笑侬亦因此结识了英俊不羁，经常流连瑛家的富家少爷詹时雨（张国荣饰）。年青貌美的笑侬来到瑛家后，成为名流争相追求的对象，瑛立心想培养笑侬成为交际花，成为她结交名流的工具，但笑侬不愿，打算离开香港。

笑侬与时雨互相吸引，而瑛希望笑侬留下，故背后促使笑侬与时雨结为夫妇。婚后不久，笑侬得悉与时雨的婚事由瑛幕后摆布，误以为时雨与她结婚是与瑛的交易条件，大受刺激，怀疑时雨是否真心爱她，亦伺机向瑛报复。此时时雨老父病逝，父亲只留下一间大屋予时雨，时雨再得不到家族的照顾，风光不再。而笑侬为生活，返回瑛家成为交际圈红人。时雨尊严尽失，更揶揄笑侬所为，而笑侬却不肯与时雨离婚，两人互相折磨。

笑侬中学同学秦小曼 ( 周秀兰饰 ) 的父亲秦简夫（刘兆铭饰）是一富商，在时雨笑侬婚礼上重遇邂逅多年的瑛，两人动了真情，导致简夫决定与妻子离婚。笑侬计上心头，决定以此事向瑛报复，先在小曼面前揭穿简夫与瑛的关系，更不惜灌醉一直暗恋简夫的中学同学邹素卿，带她到简夫住处以勾引简夫。简夫虽然没有乘人之危，可是瑛却误会简夫欺骗自己，伤心欲绝，激动地驾车，岂料发生意外，最后堕崖身亡。当时雨知道笑侬的所作所为后，对她大为反感，而笑侬的朋友们亦知道了笑侬多年来对她们耍的毒辣手段，亦私下怒骂她并跟她绝交。笑侬在众叛亲离的情况下，亦知此情难再，答允跟时雨分手。随着离婚派对的完结，人去楼空。

此时日军攻打香港，九龙沦陷，笑侬独一人感到凄然冷清，突然萌起自杀念头，服下了毒酒。因日军的登陆，时雨被迫返回，回到家后发现笑侬已服毒。最后，时雨拥著笑侬，望着窗外的落日，等著日军战机的轰炸。之前的恩怨情仇随着夕阳的余辉散尽
